Malignant mesothelioma is a type of deadly disease. Even though the patients do not have any symptoms, this type of cancer spreads easily throughout the body. How does malignant mesothelioma affect?

Malignant mesothelioma is usually caused by exposure to asbestos and carcinogenic material, which is used in the construction process. Some people are affected by exposure to a silicate mineral called zeolite. This type of disease usually affects the internal organs of the body. In many cases malignant mesothelioma affects the ribcage and lungs.

What are the types of malignant mesothelioma?

There are three types of malignant mesothelioma. They are malignant epithelial mesothelioma, sarcomatoid and mixed mesothelioma. The most common type is epithelial mesothelioma. If malignant mesothelioma is diagnosed, the next step is to determine the stage of the disease.

Which is the most common type of mesothelioma and how does it affect the lungs?

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer which forms thin layers of lining in the tissues. When the cancer forms in the chest, it affects the pleura of the lungs. And this is the most common type of mesothelioma. MRI and CT scans are used to determine the extent of the tumor cells spread in the tissue linings. It may affect the peritoneum which covers the abdominal cavity. In rare cases, it can affect the pericardium which can cause heart diseases.

What is chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy is a system of treatment which kills the cancer cells. It is given to the patients either in the form of tablets or it is injected directly. In some cases, the drugs are directly inserted into the chest.  It helps to destroy the growth of cancer cells. It is given to patients before and after surgery in order to limit the growth of mesothelioma.

Why mesothelioma is termed as "cancer of asbestos"?

Mesothelioma as a lung cancer remains a challenge for the medical experts. Mesothelioma can be either malignant or non-malignant in nature. This type of cancer is primarily caused due to the exposure of asbestos. And thus it is known as "cancer of asbestos."

If mesothelioma is not detected at an early stage, the cancer may spread to the other parts of the body. Doctors use several techniques such as Butchart system, the TNM system, or the latest Brigham System to determine mesothelioma. Some treatment centers have involved in cancer clinical trials using biological therapy and immunotherapy.
