Pleural mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor which affects mesothelial cells outside the lungs and inside the ribs. It also affects the heart and abdomen. Pleural mesothelioma is caused due to the exposure of asbestos. These fibers are ingested into the body by breathing or by swallowing.

Pleural mesothelioma includes four stages. In the initial stages cancer remains on the surface of the membrane. In the latter stage the cancer spreads outside the membrane. This spreads to the whole body. It affects the lymph nodes, lungs, chest, abdomen and other organs of the body.

How to treat pleural mesothelioma?

The doctor can perform a complete physical examination of the patients. It is better to take X-rays in the chest in order to find out the function of the lungs. These include various tests such as CT scan and MRI. A biopsy is needed to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. Doctors perform a thoracoscopy treatment on patients. This procedure involves making a small cut through the chest wall and then inserting a thin-lighted tube into the chest between the two ribs. They can also obtain tissue as a sample for the analysis.

What are the other options to treat pleural mesothelioma?

There are many options present regarding the treatment of pleural mesothelioma.
Surgical treatment, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are the best ways to treat pleural mesothelioma. Surgical treatment means removal of the affected part of the lung and pleura, which surrounds the heart. Radiotherapy is applied to the chest and it helps to prevent the tumor growth. Chemotherapy is used to stop the growth of cancer cells.
